200,000 yen Handouts for Students in Financial Trouble

As a support measure for students whose part-time job income has decreased due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, Japan government decided to give a maximum of 200,000 yen per person.

Who can apply

According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the target of support is students of universities, graduate schools, junior colleges, and colleges of technology, as well as students of vocational schools and Japanese language schools whose income has dropped significantly due to the effects of coronavirus, making it difficult to continue studying.

The amount of payment

100,000 yen will be paid to students whose part-time job income has decreased due to the absence of leave, of which 200,000 yen will be paid to students in households exempt from residence tax.

About the procedure

Those who want to apply for the benefit should apply to the school they are attending first.

The schools will confirm students’ financial conditions to see if the payment requirements are met or not. If it is approved, the money will be paid out through the Japan Student Services Organization.

When to start

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology wants to be able to provide benefits from around mid-June after showing the schools how to check if students meet the requirements or not.

Note: The student payout is in addition to the government’s one-off 100,000 yen cash handouts for every resident in Japan, aimed at cushioning the impact of the pandemic.
